The chemical used in refrigerants, I think using R22 now displaces oxygen. While everyone was outside, the place was completely transmitted, and refrigerator not yet run, everyone should be fine. I'm curious about why it smelled horrible. Are you sure the refrigerator is only 1.5 years old? Some of the oldest used ammonia, way back long ago. R22, or whatever R (refrigerant) they are using now, you should only have caused problems, while in the air.
